Carolyn and I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We're already hard at work on the plans for 2016. I'm happy to report that the dates for our matches at Ridgway have been reserved, and we have some exciting news.

Mark your calendar now!

Sunday April 24 - 40 Shot Match
Sunday May 29 - 40 Shot Match
Saturday June 25 & Sunday June 26 - PA State Championship, 60 Shot Formats
Sunday July 24 - 40 Shot Match
Sunday August 28 - 40 Shot Match
Saturday September 24 & Sunday September 25 - 1st Annual Eastern NATIONAL Championship, 40 Shot Formats
Sunday October 30 - 40 Shot Match

1st Annual Eastern National Match

Yes, you read that right. In conversations with the competitive shooting division of the NRA, we decided that it would be a good idea to hold Western Nationals at Raton and Eastern Nationals at Ridgway. That creates the possibility of an additional match in 2017 and beyond, the East Meets West Championship. Stay tuned for details.
Feel free to contact me any time if you have questions or suggestions. See you at Ridgway!

Sincerely,
Craig Duncan

Hello fellow Silhouette Shooters,

In response to many requests from competitors we've extended the dates of the Eastern Nationals.
The match will now run from September 22nd to the 25th.
This will allow us to have two days for scope rifles and two days for iron sights.

2016 Match Information

Winter is drawing to a close and the shooting season will soon be upon us. 2016 promises to be an exciting year for the Black Powder Cartridge Sports!

As many of you are aware, Jim Kidwell has stepped up to the plate and will be in charge of the Western Nationals this year. Kudos to you Jim! It's great to see the NRA giving control and support of our matches back to the competitors.
Eastern National BPCR Championship
Which brings us to the brand new Eastern BPCR Silhouette Nationals to be held at Ridgway on September 22-25. This will be an NRA registered match # 2016138667. The first two days will be Iron Sights, with Scope following on Saturday and Sunday. Here is the complete 2016 Ridgway Match Schedule.
Early Registration until July 31, 2016
Early registration for the Eastern National is now open! Match fees are $50 per day per rifle. Fees will go up on August 1, so register soon! Just print and mail this Early Registration Form.

If you can't access the form, give me a shout and I'll mail it to you. Forms will also be available at our monthly matches.
Additional Information
The range will be open for practice on the Tuesday and Wednesday preceding the match. Be aware that we will have to share the range with any club members that wish to shoot during practice days, but it'll give us a chance to convert them! A BBQ is planned for Saturday night and is included in the match fee. If you have a favorite recipe, bring it along and share it with others.

The awards ceremony will be held Sunday afternoon, after all the smoke has cleared and we've tallied the results. Winners will be awarded medals, certificates, and pins. We're lining up some exciting prizes! All prizes will be awarded via a lottery system. So no matter how you shoot, if your name is drawn you could win primers, brass, gunpowder, a rifle, and more!
Feel free to contact me any time if you have questions or suggestions. See you at Ridgway!

Ridgway BPCR Newsletter
April 2016

In three short weeks it will be the start of the 2016 BPCR Silhouette season at the Ridgway Rifle Club. Come join us for the 40-shot match on April 24. Carolyn and I are looking forward to getting back down there, seeing old friends, meeting new friends, and hopefully tipping over some steel while we're at it.

2016 promises to be an exciting year. We'll be welcoming a few new competitors to the sport and welcoming back some who've not shot at Ridgway for a few years. With the club's help, we'll be making available 4 points in the center of the firing line for shooting from the seated position. We hope to have that done by May - stay tuned. I'll be doing some work at the 500 meter rams, to make it easier to see where one bank ends and the next starts. The chicken swingers will be attended to as well.

For those unfamiliar with the club, there is a fully equipped loading bench in the High Power club house. The range is always open for practice at least one day before the match, two if we get there soon enough. If you arrive early and bring your own components, you can do load testing at the range. There will be folks there willing to give you advice on what works and what doesn't. Try your ideas under actual range conditions! I'll have a Magnetospeed V-3 chronograph available. I'll also bring along my Hawkeye bore scope if you wish to check your cleaning regime. Practice is fun!

Thoughts about the Eastern Nationals
I'm happy to have been given the opportunity by both the NRA and the Ridgway Rifle Club to host an event like the Eastern Nationals. I took a ride down to Ridgway the beginning of February as I wanted to attend the monthly club meeting. We spent some time talking about the Eastern National taking place in September. I'm pleased to say that the club is fully on board with the idea and willing to work to make it a great event for everyone involved.

Increasing interest and attendance in the Black Powder Silhouette sport has always been near and dear to my heart. When Carolyn and I first volunteered to be Match Directors it was to preserve the sport at Ridgway. For without a match director there would be no matches.

Our first year was a bit intimidating, much like opening a small business. We got through it with help from the folks shooting there. We made mistakes, we learned and we listened to the competitors. One of the things I kept hearing was how nice it would be to hold a National event at Ridgway. It made me chuckle to think about it, as we were mainly worried about making it through the season without dropping the ball too badly.

This news letter was Carolyn's idea, as was the survey we sent out early last year. We feel it's important to keep in touch with folks interested in shooting the matches at Ridgway. We made other changes such as drawing names for the prizes awarded. That idea came from a Master Class competitor and it was a great idea. We award a $25 Midway gift certificate to the most improved shooter at every match. For the National match, CPA rifles is building a 22 silhouette rifle. We'll have our other sponsors as well.

This match in September is very much a work in progress. It's new and different and "not the way things have always been done." I don't believe in copying failure and expecting success. Once it became my responsibility to run matches I decided I wasn't buying into that mindset. It's a self-fulfilling circle.

For as long as I can remember, most of what I've read in printed editorials and on various internet forums has been all doom and gloom about the decline and death of the sport we all love. I feel that taking the same amount of energy expended in tearing things down with negativity can be better utilized building things up.

See you at Ridgway!

Sincerely,
Craig Duncan

Congratulations to Brian Chilson, winner of the BPCR match at Ridgway PA with a score of 31. Dave Heeter took Second Open with a 26, and Greg Lauver placed Third Open with a 25. In Scope, Brian Chilson shot 37 to earn First Scope, followed by Ken White with a 29 and John Haagen with 26. Brian Chilson shot a long run of 12 chickens with a scope, beating his own national record of 11 for Open and setting a new record for Senior. Also of note, Ken was using a 45-70 shooting swaged paper-patched bullets of his own design. Great shooting, guys! Complete results are below.

Turnout was higher than in the past several years, with 29 rifles and 26 shooters. We were extremely pleased to welcome not one but four new shooters - John S., Brian W., Dave P., and Charlie Z. Congratulations on taking the plunge!

It was a beautiful spring day, with cloudy skies giving way to sunshine and temps in the 60s. Winds were calm in the morning and light in the afternoon, leaving mirage as the main challenge.

Our next match is May 29, which is Memorial Day weekend. Hope to see you at Ridgway!

Sincerely,

Craig Duncan

Hello Folks

It's hard to believe we're at the end of May already. Time sure flies! Our second shoot of the season will take place on Sunday the 29th. What better way to celebrate Memorial Day?

Range Improvements
This month we're making some improvements out on the Ram line to make it easier to see where one bank of animals ends and the next one starts. There'll be a six foot high 2X6, painted bright red, between each bank and also behind each support for the swingers. We'll also be painting all the rest of the swinger supports bright red as well.

At the firing line, there will be at least two positions available without the cross rail for those who wish to shoot from the seated position. I'll have the materials to make four but will have to see if I have the time.

On this Memorial Day weekend, we honor and remember those who gave their lives in defending the freedoms we enjoy to this day.

Brian Chilson is this month's BPCR match winner at Ridgway PA with a score of 32. Greg Lauver took Second Open with a 27, followed by Dan Vivian with a 25. In Scope, Brian Chilson shot 35 to earn First Scope, followed by Kenny White and John Haagen with scores of 29 and 27, respectively. Great shooting, guys! Complete results are below.

We enjoyed a warm spring day, with a mix of clouds and sunshine. There was very little wind and minimal mirage. It was a great day to be out with old friends and new. We had a strong turnout again this month, with 28 competitors shooting a total of 31 rifles, and we were pleased to welcome three new shooters and two juniors.

Putting on a match is a lot of work. Thanks to all the unsung heroes who pitch in and help with painting and setting targets, range work, relay calling, cleaning, emptying garbage, paperwork, etc. We couldn't do it without you.

Our next match is the PA State Championship on June 25-26. You do not need to be a PA resident to compete. Each day is a 60-shot format, so start loading your ammo now!

Sincerely,

Craig Duncan

Time flies! Here we are, mid-way through June and the PA State Championship is less than two weeks away on June 25-26. Glad my Chief Statistical Officer/wife reminded me, as I need to get started loading ammo! And ammo we'll need. The PA State shoot is a two-day match with 60 rounds per day for score. We'll have some great prizes from our sponsors. We'll also have engraved black marble trophies for first place in Iron sights and Scope sights.

Update on Range Improvements
I received some good feedback from competitors last month about the markers on the Ram line. It's much easier to see where one bank ends and the next one starts.

As reported last month, 2 of the rails at the firing line are now removable, allowing for up to 4 competitors to shoot from a seated position. If you'd like to do that, please let me know in advance so I can remove the rails, and bring your long sticks.
Practice Days

Carolyn and I plan on arriving at Ridgway midafternoon on Thursday the 23rd. The range will be open for practice that afternoon and Friday as well. I'll bring along my Magnetospeed Chronograph if anyone is curious about the speed and consistency of their ammo. I'll also bring along my Bullseye Target Cam, which lets you track shots. Perhaps Saturday evening we can get a little side match going on Homer, purely for bragging rights.

Hello All,

Let me apologize for taking so long to get the results of the PA State Shoot out to everyone. Life got busy for me once we got back to NH.

Congratulations to Brian Chilson on winning the PA State Championship for BPCR Silhouette at Ridgway PA! This was a 2-day match with a 60-shot format, and Brian's aggregate score of 103 set a national Senior record. Please note that these results are provisional depending on confirmation by the NRA. 2nd Open was earned by Bob Bloyer with a 90, and Dave Heeter took 3rd Open with an 83. Complete results are below.

At the end of the 2nd day there were 2 tie scores. In Master Class, John Whitcomb and Dave Heeter had a shoot off on chickens to decide the winner. Dave won the honors!
In the AA Class, John Estok and Larry Kiehl shot turkeys, and shot turkeys and shot more turkeys until 13 or so birds had fallen. Then Larry suddenly put one in the dirt in front of the birds. Did you really miss that shot Larry or were you just tired of shooting? :-)

We had a total of 24 shooters for the 2-day event. We had 2 new shooters, Evan Short and Al Aubin. Hope you guys had a good time!

The weather was in the lower 80s, mostly sunny with occasional clouds and light winds. It sure was better than last year! Mirage was variable, and fairly easy to read. All in all, pleasant shooting conditions.

Due to the 2016 Ohio Valley Regional, we had a lower turnout than normal, and needed only 2 relays per day to complete the match. Our target setter were quick and efficient as always.

Thank you to our match sponsors:
Swiss Powder
Brownell's
Wolfe Publishing
Starline Brass
Roto Metals
SPG Products
Green Mountain Barrels
Brooks Moulds
Circle Fly Wads
Walters Wads
And others for personal donations
Thank you to all the folks who helped us run a successful match - we couldn't do it without your help. In no particular order: John Estok for relay calling, Debbie Chilson for post-match paperwork, Greg and Darlene Lauver, Larry Kiehl and others for target setting/painting. Lester Henry, Rodney Barton and others helped with the post match clean-up.

Our next match is a 40 shot match July 24th. With several regular competitors headed to Raton NM for the Western National match, it's a good opportunity to enjoy a day of play on Saturday and shoot a relaxed club match on Sunday. I plan on wringing out a couple of antique Mil-Surp rifles on Saturday. See you at Ridgway!
Sincerely,

Craig Duncan

Hello Folks,

It's hard to believe we're getting near the end of July; the summer is sure going fast.
That means it's almost time for our July match on Sunday the 24th. It's a 40-shot match. I always look forward to our one-day club matches as they're pretty laid back and a lot of fun.

More Range Improvements
This month the range improvements will continue with wind streamers being installed on the 2, 3 and 4 hundred meter berms. The poles will only be about 5 feet tall and will be set slightly behind the animals to more accurately reflect wind conditions at the targets. There will be 5 per berm.

Saturday Lever Rifle Match
And for all you Lever Rifle fans, there's a match going on at Ridgway the same weekend. They'll be shooting small bore and centerfire over on the 200 yard range Saturday. I've never tried it but it sounds fun and it might be a good chance to shoot a 375 I bought earlier this year. It also means on Saturday for practice, we won't have all ten banks of animals. I don't see it being a problem as we'll still have 3 or 4 banks plus the swingers.

I'd like to wish all those competing in the Western Nationals good luck, good scores and the best of conditions!

Hello Folks,

Due to some combination of luck, skill, and a few of our top competitors being out at Raton, this month's match winner is... yours truly, with a 30. Dave Heeter earned 2nd Open with a 29, and Dan Vivian took 3rd Open with a 27. In Scope, Roger Tremba shot a superb 31, and Mark Chronister earned 2nd Scope with a 29. In other noteworthy accomplishments, we had 2 upclassifications: John Sweka's B-to-AA leapfrog and mine to AAA. Grant Rogers had a ram grand slam - doesn't that just roll off the tongue? Congratulations, guys! It's good to see several new/returning shooters climbing back up the learning curve, and there were some new observers as well. Complete results are below.

It was a beautiful, hot summer day. The morning started cool and calm, with periods of light winds and/or cloud cover as temperatures climbed into the high 80s. Mirage was varied and light to medium. Without our usual Iron Man competitors in attendance, we had just 2 relays. In August we will have 3 relays to accommodate Iron Man shooters and for the anticipated greater attendance in preparation for the Eastern Nationals in September.

Thank you to Craig Artman for relay calling, and to Donna Vivian and Bonnie Artman for help with the post-match paperwork. Thanks to Mark Chronister and Mike Benson for help setting and painting targets with us before the match. Folks may not realize it, but range work is done by us shooters before each match, and we are deeply grateful to anyone who can come early and volunteer their help. Thank you to the Ridgway Rifle Club for their personal support - several people stopped by - and providing such an awesome place to shoot.

For those who have signed up for the Eastern Nationals, information will be forthcoming in the coming weeks.
Sincerely,

Craig Duncan

BPCR Eastern Nationals Update
August 2016

First of all, a big thanks to Jim Kidwell, Steve Rhoads, and all the others who made the 2016 Western Nationals such a resounding success!

The 2016 Eastern BPCR Silhouette Nationals will take place at the Ridgway Rifle Club in Ridgway PA. Dates are Thursday September 22nd through Sunday the 25th. The iron sights competition will be held Thursday-Friday, followed by the scope competition Saturday-Sunday. Each day will be 60 shots for score, so bring plenty of ammo.

About the Match
To answer some questions we've been getting, there will be 3 relays. Shooters/spotters will sign up in squads of 2 or 3, and banks and animals will be assigned by drawing names. With the expanded number of positions and 10 banks of animals, we expect that it will be feasible for people to "dig in" and not have to schlep equipment to and from the line. There are a limited number of spots for shooting from a seated position, so please let me know in advance if you need one.

Carolyn and I are going to keep registration open at least until the end of August. We're still waiting to hear from some folks who wish to attend. We could also still use some help in the form of score keepers, line officers, and folks to help Carolyn with post-match administrivia.

Fun Stuff
Trophies and medals have arrived! We have trophies for First, Second and Third place in Iron Sights, Scope Sights and Iron Man. We also have Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for all classes. (Scope is still considered a single class.)

Some folks are only shooting Irons or Scope, so we've decided to have a BBQ / Shindig on Friday night. That will allow all the competitors and families to get together for an evening of camaraderie and swapping excuses. Food and drink will be provided by the club.

Friday night we'll award trophies and medals for Iron Sights and also hold a prize drawing for the loot that was so generously donated by our sponsors. That way everyone will have a chance to go home with something good.

The weather should be beautiful in late September, typically warm days in the 70's with cool nights. The trees will be turning and adding their color to the beauty of the area. There's always the chance of fog in the morning, but in five years we've never seen it fail to burn off in time for 8AM practice.

We're excited about the Eastern Nationals. It should be fun and exciting and, we hope, the start of something good!

Please feel free to call or email with any questions or concerns you may have.

See you at Ridgway!

Sincerely,
Craig Duncan
