April 2017

Dear Shooters,

Only a couple of more weeks until the start of the 2017 season at the Ridgway Rifle Club! Our first match of the year will be Sunday April 23rd. This will be a standard 40 shot match. Carolyn and I will arrive Friday the 21st and will have the range open Saturday for practice.

We won't be shooting any "extracurricular" matches this month. I want to see the range and the improvements that have been done over the winter. Plus, I'm way behind the curve with my casting and loading.

Be sure to bring warm clothes and rain gear for whatever Mother Nature decides to throw at us. We'll provide coffee and donuts, and the club house has potable water. Bring your lunch.
Match-Day Info

7:00-8:45 Registration
8:00-8:45 Sight-in
8:45 Mandatory shooters meeting
9:00 Match starts

Shoot is open to NRA and non-NRA members. Current NRA silhouette rules apply. 2017 NRA Silhouette Classification book required and may be purchased at the match. If you're buying a 2017 book, please bring your 2016 book so we can transfer your high scores. Entry fee of $25 per day (Junior Shooters $10).

We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
Craig Duncan

I've been watching the weather for our match this weekend.
Depending on who's rolling the weather dice it may be "Partly Cloudy" with a chance of rain or heavy afternoon T-storms.
I won't cancel a match because of rain, but if T-storms roll through during the match, I'll have to.
We can't have the target setters out in a field filled with long steel rails during an electrical storm.
As usual, Carolyn and I will be there Friday afternoon to set up and the range will be open Saturday for practice/sight in.

On a side note, I'm also bringing a nice old Swede CG-63 to try out at the longer ranges.
You have to love a club that has 401 steel targets set up for ones shooting pleasure.

Hello Shooters,

The first BPCR match of 2017 is in the books. Congratulations to Brian Chilson, match winner with a score of 33. Dave Heeter took 2nd Open with a 32, and John Sweka was 3rd Open with a 25. (Note that Shaun Latham also scored a 25, with chickens as the tiebreaker.) In Scope, Brian Chilson was on top with a 33, followed by Greg Lauver with 23 and Lester Henry at 22. See below for complete results.

We had a total of 23 shooters and 25 rifles, which is a typical turnout for April, but unusual in that several of the "usual suspects" were unable to attend and instead we added 3 brand new shooters to our ranks along with some returning newcomers from last year. It's been fun helping people learn and watching them improve. On that note, congratulations to Brian Wakefield for up-classifying to A.

It was a gorgeous day. The previous day's practice had been cloudy and chilly, but we enjoyed a day of blue skies and warm sunshine. Winds were light and variable but mirage was definitely a challenge, especially at the ram line, which can be seen in the lack of 5- and 10-pins.

As always, thank you to everyone who helped with the match, from range work to administrative help to emptying the trash. A special thanks to those who coached the new shooters. We couldn't do it without you!

Hope to see you all at our next match on May 28!

Sincerely,

Craig Duncan

Our May match is a little over 2 weeks away! This month has sure flown by. I can't think of a better way to celebrate Memorial Day than by spending time with friends shooting BPCR Silhouette at Ridgway.

We should see some big changes at the range this month. There should be some new bunkers for the target setters. Work has been progressing down at the 200 yard range. There will be 10 banks of animals to better support CLA Silhouette. Makes me think I should load up some 375 Win cast bullet loads and let Carolyn try some chickens "up close." :-)

As usual we'll be arriving the Friday before, sometime after lunch, to get things ready. We always appreciate people who help us paint and set targets. Typically most of them are lying in the dirt when we arrive. Except for the chickens - I wonder why that is??

Last month we had gorgeous weather and got sunburned. This month, we'll probably want bug spray. We'll provide coffee and donuts, and the club house has potable water. Bring your lunch.

Congratulations to Brian Chilson, this month's match winner with a score of 34. Dave Heeter was 2nd Open with a 31, and Carolyn Snyder (aka darling wife) was 3rd Open with a 28. Carolyn also earned a grand slam for rams. In Scope, Brian Chilson came in first with a 34, followed by John Haagen with 28 and Rodney Barton with a 25. See below for complete results.

We had a total of 24 shooters and 26 rifles. For the first time since Carolyn and I have been running the matches, the scope shooters outnumbered the iron sights.

The rain that was predicted for match day never materialized, so conditions were better than expected. The day was mostly overcast with light winds and little or no mirage, though visibility was affected by damp earth and drifting smoke. In contrast, the previous day's practice featured some of the worst boiling mirage we've seen at Ridgway - like a fun house mirror, except without the fun.

This month we were more proactive about asking for help, and people responded. Thank you to all those who helped with setting and painting targets, office work, and cleanup. One of the Ridgway club members told us he can tell when we've been there because we leave the range and clubhouse cleaner than anyone else. Thank you, all!

Last but not least, thank you to all our current and past military service members on this Memorial Day weekend. Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable holiday!

Sincerely,

Craig Duncan

Oh, and, because I'm proud of her, here's a video of my wife earning her Grand Slam on Rams. Pardon the poor cinematography.

Hello Shooters

The 2017 Eastern Regional is less than 2 weeks away, June 24th and 25th. This is an NRA-Sanctioned match, so in addition to the customary certificates, pins and prizes, medals will be awarded for the top three places in iron sights and scope.

It's a two-day match with 40 shots fired each day for score, not 60 like the PA State Championship which used to be held in June. The range will be open for sight-in and practice on the 23rd.

Scope Classifications
We've received several emails about Scope classifications. It seems that we were in error about the rules. We are familiar with rules 3.4.1 and 17.5 concerning equipment, however, rule 19.15-c got right by us. Carolyn and I apologize for our oversight. The NRA does recognize Scope classifications. Going forward, we will have certificates (as we did this month) and engraved pins (volunteers welcome - it's easy but tedious) for Scope shooters the same as we do for Iron sights.

Carolyn mentioned that in the past, some scope shooters didn't have their classification in their record books, and/or didn't have their 2 highest previous year's scores entered. If this information is missing from your 2017 record book, or if you've recently switched to Scope, please bring your books from previous year(s) to your next match to get it sorted out. Your Statistical Officer thanks you.

A digression: We live in NH, 535 miles from Ridgway. Starting in April 2012, we have shot BPCR only at Ridgway. When John O'Donnell stepped down from Match Director at the end of 2013, and no one else stepped up, we took a deep breath and decided that if it had to be us or no matches, it would be us. We counted on others to help us, and you have, thank you.

It takes us 5 days to travel to PA and conduct a 1 day match. There are no BPCR matches within 500 miles of where we live that shoots silhouette and has a 1000 yd range. While we would like to attend other matches, it hasn't been an option due to work and family obligations.

The main point: We have not had the opportunity to see how other matches are run. If you have suggestions, please talk to us at the matches or, even better, volunteer to make something happen the way you'd like it to be. That's what we did. Now that I'm retired, I hope to "get out" a bit more, and I appreciate the personally forwarded invitations. I hope to see familiar faces at new ranges this summer.

Moth Classification
On a lighter note, Clayton Grove emailed me a possible classification of our fluttery friends that were at our match last month, shared with his permission:

"As best as I can figure, our moth 'companions' are an inchworm called Ferguson's Scallop Shell. There is a similar species, that can be 'separated' through genitalia investigation - not my 'department.'" Ha! Thanks, Clay!

We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,
Craig Duncan

une 2017 BPCR Match Results

Congratulations to Brian Chilson, winner of the Eastern Regional BPCR match at Ridgway PA, with an aggregate score of 59 for the 2-day, 80-shot match. I was 2nd Open with a 56, followed by Dave Heeter with a 53. In Scope, Brian Chilson was first with an aggregate 69, Ed Heeter, earned 2nd with a 54, and John Haagen took 3rd Scope with a 53. Complete results are below.

We had a total of 23 shooters (25 rifles) each day.

Our turnout was light, which is OK as there were many other BPCR Silhouette matches going on in the region before and after our match. Shippensburg, McDonald, Kentucky, Michigan and others I'm sure I'm missing. There are a plethora of BPCR Silhouette matches here in the East, pick several, shoot your heart out and have a ball with like-minded people

Someday I want to shoot each and every one of them.

Practice day which was Friday. We had sun, rain, sun, wind, more rain etc. The PA weather couldn't make up its mind - perfect conditions for practice as you didn't know what was coming next.

Saturday morning dawned foggy, burned off early, and the weather was beautiful - partly sunny and in the 70s - but made for tricky conditions with the constantly changing wind, mirage, light and the steam floating up from the wet berms.

Sunday was a perfect day to shoot. It might have been the Apple Moonshine, the Chocolate Stout, or the good friends and good times shared the night before, but I won, for the first time ever. Either that or it was the conditions between banks 4 through 6.

I want to say Thank You to our prize sponsors, We truly appreciate everything you do to help and promote our sport.

July 2017

First things first - It's come to my attention that two members of our shooting community were involved in a plane crash on their way to the BPCR Nationals in Raton. Let's keep them in our thoughts a prayers.

Our July Match is less than 3 weeks away. It's a busy month at Ridgway. The Small Bore Nationals will be happening from 7/15 through the 18th. Then, hot on their heels will come the High Power Nationals on the 20th, 21st and 22nd. For the long range crowd there will be a VBR (Varmint Bench Rest) with silhouettes from 850 to 1000 yards, little ones at that.

Our match will take place on the 5th Sunday which is the 30th. Our Chief Statistical Officer, Carolyn Snyder will not be able to join us this month so I'll be running the match solo. I'll be arriving at Ridgway early, on the 14th, to lend a hand running the Nationals. I get to spend 18 days there - nice work when you can get it. It also means anyone who wishes to show up early and shoot BPCR may, as I'll be there. The range should be free from the 24th on.

We always appreciate people who help us. Be it painting and setting targets, helping with score keeping and awards or general clean up after the match is over. It couldn't happen without you and your support.

We'll provide coffee and donuts, and the club house has potable water. Bring your lunch.

Ridgway August BPCR Match Results

The August match is in the books!
We had beautiful sunny mild weather with the typical challenging Ridgway conditions. The wind was gentle to us for the most part however. The nights and mornings were chilly with temps dipping into the high 40’s

Thirty one competitors were on the line, including four Father and Son teams.
We also had an old shooter return, Welcome Back Ross!
Scope rifles outnumbered Iron sights by a total of one rifle. I guess it’s a trend that will continue.
We had many ties that were decided by class and animal count, but no shoot-offs.

Brian won both iron sights and scope.
In Iron sights, yours truly was second with Dave Heeter third.

Scope class had Lester Henery in second place with Ross Aknfield hot on his heels for third.

Great Shooting Guys!

I have the complete results listed below and have separated them for Iron Sights and Scope.

Next month will be the PA State Championship. It’s a two day match with 40 shots fired per day for score. The dates are September 23rd and 24th. The range will be open for practice on Friday the 22nd. There’s no pre-registration and you don’t have to be a PA resident to shoot. You do need to be a PA resident to be the State Champion though.

There’s plenty of parking for RV’s on the High Power range and at the main club house.
Come join us at Ridgway in September. It’s beautiful in the early fall. Cool days, crisp nights and color in the trees. If you can, add a few days to your stay and see the things the area has to offer.

Yours Truly,

Craig Duncan

Hello Fellow Shooters,

The PA State Championship is just ten days away!
I should probably get busy casting bullets and loading ammo.

This year’s match will be held the 23rd and 24th, with 40 shots per day for score.
It’s an NRA sanctioned match as well.

Anyone can win this match but you MUST be a PA resident to be declared the PA State Champion.

The range will be open for practice on Friday the 22nd.

There will be some nice prizes from our generous sponsors as well.

There is RV parking and camping both on the High-power range and the Main Clubhouse with electrical hook-ups. There are showers at the main clubhouse.

Hello Folks,

Autumn is in full swing here in NH.
Hunting season is here for most or fast approaching.

Our final Silhouette match of the season will be on Sunday the 22nd.
I’m looking forward to one more chance to shoot with friends before the season ends and winter sets in.

This will be a standard 40 shot match.
As always, the range will be open for practice the Saturday before.

Match-Day Info
7:30-8:45 Registration
8:00-8:45 Sight-in
8:45 Mandatory shooters meeting
9:00 Match starts

Shoot is open to NRA and non-NRA members. Current NRA silhouette rules apply. 2017 NRA Silhouette Classification book required and may be purchased at the match. Entry fee of $25 per day (Junior Shooters $10).
Coffee and donuts will be available, but bring your lunch.

With the 2017 shooting season drawing to a close, I’ve been thinking about the 2018 season.

Folks, we are fortunate.

As competitors, we have a plethora of matches we can choose to attend.

From coast to coast, From the north to the south.

We also have many matches that conflict with one another.

There's much chatter about declining attendance, with some matches being discontinued because of lack of attendance.

How do we fix this?

Think about it from a younger persons view point.
You have a wife, husband, children you work hard to take car of.
You enjoy the shooting sports and search for a venue that you enjoy.
You have a finite amount of time and money to devote to your chosen sport.
You bought a BPCR rifle that you've lusted for and want to shoot it - competitively.

Where to you find clear, concise information about events to attend?

As Shooters and probably more important as Match Directors, we need to figure out a way to publicize these matches and list them.
It needs to be on a free and accessible form of media, be it print or electronic.

Competitors need to budget money and time to attend events.
Rifle ranges and Match Directors need to plan range use and competitor accommodations.

I’m looking for input about this from fellow Shooters and Match Directors.

Feel free to contact me with and questions, concerns or ideas you may have.

See you at Ridgway

Yours Truly,

Craig Duncan
