New Meber from SW Ohio

Post by Ohio3Wheels » Wed Jul 08, 2015 11:47 am

After a long layoff I've finally been able to get back to shooting and enjoying it. A lot of eye problems now fixed and life in general cut into shooting.
I've had my C. Sharps in 40-65 since the early 90's and back then I was able to shoot in some local matches at Ft St Clair and down at Milford and also in North Ky in some side shoots at the IHMSA shoots.
I notice in reading through the forums that a lot has changed and a lot has pretty much stayed the same.

So some questions.

I have the local DNR range that limited to 100 yards and another local range that only has 90 yards. Is it possible to practice at these ranges for the longer ranges?

Where might there be matches or even open practices with in a few hours drive of Dayton?

Thanks in advance and make smoke,
Curt

Welcome to the forum Curt.
There's a silhouette match the 3rd weekend of every month in Ridgway Pa.
If it's a month when its a 1 day match on Sunday you can come east and get a full day of practice on the preceding Saturday.

Thanks, Craig, I'll have to investigate the possibility of heading that way.

There is a "short course" "Buffalo" match, I believe the targets are at pistol distances, at www.tuscorifle.org , just west of New Philadelphia, Ohio, off US-250. In fact there is one there this weekend on the 11th. There is a calendar on the website. The shoots are monthly.

There are pigs at 100 meters, turkeys at 150, rams at 210 and chickens at 235 (banks of 5 each). It is a fun/casual type match and folks will help a new person out/spot for you. People there shoot smokeless and/or BP, I do not know whether gas checks are allowed. Even the chickens are shot off sticks.

Thanks, David, I think I'll look into that. Last time I shot at TUSCO was the '94 state IHMSA shoot. May have been the only time. I haven't done much pistol since the eyes started going in 95 or 96. Don't have near enough ammo load to make it this week end but will have to see when the September shoot is and make plans.

I might make the August shoot if I am back from Nebraska in time and not worn out. If not, maybe September. Let me know if you are going to go.

A buddy and I are going to the Sagebrush Shoot in Alliance Nebraska the 1st week of August.

This looks doable. It would be a long day but doable.I see in the schedule a number of practices are they open to non-members?

Probably your closest matches would be in Friendship Indiana and the NMLRA range. They are a nice bunch who run that match and would be very helpful for you. Other places with matches are Ashland Ky. Alma MI, Effingham IL and McDonald PA. check them out.

Friendship and Alma, just learned about Ashland and now have Effingham and Macdonald to look up. Actually if I wasn't committed to help run my dog club event tomorrow I'd be head for Friendship to at least watch a match.

Thanks for the info and the offer, make smoke,

Next month there will be a couple skirmishes close to where you are in troy ohio. Its not silhouette but still a great shooting sport if you like shooting civil war era firearms in timed competition. You should check it out.
