Storing molds while still full.

Post by Singleshot S.A. » Mon Apr 23, 2018 10:10 pm

Does any one here store their molds away with a projectile still in the mold. ?

I don't, but the question was raised at the Club last week.

What would the advantage / dis advantage be ?

I usually do not. I don't see an advantage unless someone things that it would reduce the air in the mould and thus the humidity. But since I don't have a problem with empty moulds, I don't see the advantage.
I'm not from here, I just live here.

I have had best luck over the last 60+ years of casting to keep my 80+ molds in
GI ammo cans (with Good lid gasket) between casting. No bullets left in cavities.
I also have a few pieces of VPI rust inhibitor paper in the cans.
The molds go back into the cans soon after they cool down.
NO lube, etc spray necessary to keep them perfect and ready for nest casting run
Have never had any rust problems

i don't like dealing with oil removal before casting and i am concerned with what humidity can do to steel. if the mould is stored full up, that does nothing for it's exterior. so ... after cool down, i wrap the mould tight with "press 'n' seal" - works quite well.

Store the molds lubed and empty with a bullet in the case for reference
