45 cal paper patch hunting bullet

Post by Holdinsteady » Sun Dec 27, 2015 3:44 pm

I am looking for inputs for a 45 cal paperpatch bullet mould for use in my Shiloh 45/90. Bullet will be used for hunting Buffalo. I'm thinking a very blunt bullet cast 30-1 or softer to get as much expansion as possible, loaded over a 1/8 in lube wad. Any inputs greatly appreciated.

I would have Brooks cut a 500 gr bullet at .442 with a traditional Sharps nose. Or one of his adjustable nose pours, in the dual diameter sharps.

Thanx Ranch.....that appears to be a hollow base bullet.....is it straight wall or tapered? A Steve Brooks bullet mould?

Bullets like these:

Do much better than bullets like these, (or the ones above):

You need a good sized meplate of around .25" or even larger. And I'm not convinced that you want to go super soft. The top bullets were 30:1 and the bottom bullets were 40:1. On a bison, I would strongly consider something like 20:1 and a big meplat, driven as fast as you can possibly make it go.

Those bullets are out of an Old West mould, but I had Brooks copy it and it has a shallower hollow on the base. It's a copy of the original dual diameter Sharps bullet. The base is about .006 larger than the nose. With that smaller nose it's a good one for shooting "dirty".

So........maybe 475 to 500 gr paper patch 20-1 at approx. 1400fps from my 45/90? Is that getting close to where I need to be?

If it's got a good meplat on it, yes.

Before you call Brooks, go over to the Shiloh site and PM "77 Sharps". He knows more about killing things with BPCR rifles than most of us. He will tell you the big meplat and the hard lead. I think his favorite bullet is a truncated Brooks Creedmoor with a huge meplat. But anyway, ask him for his suggestions. He has killed more big stuff with BPCRs than anyone on any of these boards. He knows what he is talking about.
