Printer Paper for Patching Bullets

Post by mrhunterken » Sat Jul 29, 2017 8:43 pm

Has anyone tried the common 20lb. printer paper for patching bullets? How did it work out, or is it just too thick a medium to work with any success?

People post about using it all the time, but no one that is a serious competitor and routinely posts competitive scores, uses it. Thinner, is better, at least up to a point. Most of us are using tracing paper or onion skin paper that runs around 8-9 lbs. Bullets will be around .443-.444" to use these papers in a .45 caliber rifle.

You can find the former on Amazon and the latter on ebay. If you need help locating some, let me know. I'm always happy to help.

I tried some for wrapping my .44 bullets I use in the .44-100 rem st. patched with printer paper for the .45-90 and it did not shoot anywhere near as well as the onion skin paper does.
I just bought two reams of paper mill 10# onion skin paper item#onskn-n it is 100% wood fiber 37 gsm 4.9M. This is the first 100% wood fiber I used so the jury is still out but this 10 # paper measures .0017" to .0019" on the same sheet. I just measured 5 sheets and they run average of .0018".
I have not opened the second ream to check the dimensions. If you pick paper that is less then 4.9 mill you should be good to go.

Thank You Guy's It's just a curiosity question. I have #9 lb. onionskin paper from BACO that I'm presently using, and plan on sticking with it, unless something better come along, which is doubtful. I posed the question because if I had heard good things, I would have a lifetime supply.

papermill lists "onskn-n" as 9lb. it's the only paper i've been using along with a BACO JIM443530 slick and it offers good results.

mrhunterken, what jersey range are you shooting at?

Ken, I attempted to shoot the buff match with my RB. Bullets were seated out too long to clear the hammer     . Hunting season is now upon us and my shooting schedule gets iffy. PM me and maybe we can set something up. (former ammo problem has been addressed) as has that thinking thing between my ears!!
