Shooting the 50-90 2 1/2 inch

Post by thickside » Sun Jun 17, 2007 8:11 am

Anyone have any success shooting the 50-90 sharps with a 450 grain bullet thru a barrel with a 1:20 twist?
Thanks
Joe

Nope....never tried it! You'll see better results with a 720 grainer stoked up by 122 grs. Goex 1F!!

I'm using a 510 gr. PP, 103gr. of Schuetzen 2F w/ .030 wads & .125 grease cookie in a Farmingdale with good success. :D

I use a Paul Jones 650gn Creedmoor with 105gn 1P Wano; this shoots well to about 800yds but is bettered by the 45/90 with 540gn bullet for top accuracy at 1000yds.
Smaller 50cal projectiles 450 & 500gn are loaded into my 50/70.

Joe the .50-90 at this moment is my favorite and most reliable caliber out of the six black powder calibers I have.
It's not a 1/20 twist, it's a 1/22 and it will shoot just about any powder load with a 685 grain to 720 grain bullet. It will not shoot a bullet for sour grapes in the weight range you asked.
I used it for the Quigley shoot and it held very good in that strong wind with a 720 grain bullet cast with 1/50 alloy.

1/50 alloy?? Why that high on lead??

Those you sent me I think were 1/20 if I remember correctly what you told me! And those 720 grainers shot REAL GOOD!!

Well Iron Jaws that 50 eill shoot that 720 grain bullet good with 1/16 to 1/50 so I use 1/50 when I have the pot full with that stuff when I make cores for the 40 and 45 PP.
Besides lead is cheaper then tin
