.40-65 bullet info

Post by marlinman93 » Sun Feb 15, 2009 9:36 pm

I'm in the process of rebuilding a original Re. #1 Rolling Block Sporter. I've decided to go with a .40 caliber barrel and chamber it for .40-65 Win. My barrel blank is a 1-16" twist, which brings up my question.
What bullet weights will work best in the .40-65 with 1-16" twist?

Go with the Snover 400 gr and never look back.

In addition to the snover, the RCBS 400 csa is a pretty good one.

I'm having a hard time making up my mind between the Lyman Snover and the Hoch 409-405. Been using both for quite some time and both perform well.

I tried all the others in my Browning and ended up with a NASA II from Bernie Rowles at Old West Bullet Moulds in Fruita, Colorado.

So the 400 gr. bullet is best for this twist rate?

Val best is a big question.
Lighter bullets will certainly shoot well enough, but when you want to go to the long range or smack a sillywet ram and knock it down 400's are the way to go.

Thanks Ranch13! I'll give it a try when I get this thing completed. I'm still in the building stage, but the 32" Green Mountain barrel is fitted, and waiting on semi inletted stocks to get here this week, before I can complete it and shoot.-Vall

In 16 twist ,a length of 1.375 is what you need ,no longer .Arnie

Vall I think I've told you this on another board, but I've had pretty good results sizing the 412263 down to .410 and running it thru this green mtn barrel, and that's been with both black and smokeless powders.

I'm sure you have, but like most things I don't remember unless I record it for posterity! Thanks!-Vall
