Re: 1000 yard sporting scope
You can't really go wrong with a used Kowa 821
It has an angled eye piece which is almost essential for using when in prone position.
This scope isn't the most spectacular scope per se, but it sees the mirage extremely well and that is more important that anything else. It is my prone spotter.
they can often be found on ebay like this one (not mine).

Don't rule out the Meade 20x -60x with either the 80 or 100 mm objective lenses ... https://meade.factoryoutletstore.com/ca ... 158a431e23

Don't go cheap if you are a serious shooter. The cheap scopes are lacking in one area, the most critical one, that being quality glass. Do yourself a favor, attend a long range match and ask the competitors for a looksee through their scopes, a few looks will show you the difference I'm talking about. Another thing is as you age the need for quality glass increases. Good luck.

I use this one for everything.

I've compared it side by side with Kowa scopes and it is very similar for mirage reading, but the Kowa scopes might have a very slight edge I think. It's certainly good enough that I won't replace it unless it breaks.

However, no scope will allow you to see bullet holes at 1,000, however good it may be...

Actually, Gert, there are times when I have seen bullet holes (.45s) at 1000. It ain't often but it does happen early in the morning at Lodi occasionally. We shoot directly west and the backstop is very light sand. The first time it happened, I didn't believe it, but the spotter came up right where I thought I saw a hole appear.martinibelgian wroteCOLON ↑Fri Apr 19, 2019 11:08 amHowever, no scope will allow you to see bullet holes at 1,000, however good it may be...

Gert, for competition shooting over here in North America, all you really need the scope for is reading the mirage and looking at the score + spotter discs on the target. And maybe a bit of spying on adjacent targets.
Mostly what you want, IMHO, is good glass, as big an objective lens as possible, and a 45 degree eyepiece. 20x is plenty of power.
When I'm shooting a match I generally only use 20x. When shooting by myself on paper at 300 yards I crank up the power to see the bullet holes.

If you shoot a painted metal disc you can see splatters with a bausch and lomb 20x at 1000yds. You did say entry level.
