Here is a wooden box my grandfather made in 1948 for shipping his target mauser rifle to a workshop by train for repair.
The box has been in a barn all the time sinse then. Last year i got the idea to use it myself for my rifle. The lenght was allright but the lid (hatch?) was fastened with 6 woodscrews. I replaced them with a piano hinge and brass locks and a handle from an old suitcase.
Inside the box there were still newspapers from 1948 used for filling, my father thaught that nobody had opened the box in 59 years, but there were no exiting suprices when we opened it.
I have also added the two "ribs" with leather padded cut-outs that holds the rifle secured in place and also a cleaning rod.
I use the box every time i drive to the range. Its maybe a bit clumsy (heavy) but i dont have to worry about dinging the tangsight or bending the cleaning rod.
I was impressed by the quality of the companys over there that sell wagon boxes for sharps.
