Hunting bullet with a 40-70 SS

Post by Ram Hammer » Sun Aug 09, 2009 7:31 pm

I want to take my Sharps 40-70 straight hunting (white tail) and would like some suggestions for a good hunting bullet. Thanks for your input.

Sorry this took so long  Maybe I should pay attention!! I've had excellent luck w/ a Rapine 408336 that I got from BACO maybe 8 yrs. ago. Have used it on antelope and mule deer. 1 shot=1DOA animal :D
Shoot to win!

I have not used a 40 cal for hunting but I have used a 45-70 extensively. I have found that soft (30-1 or 40-1) alloys work best and that flat pointed slugs work better than round nose ones. I use a RCBS 325 FP for deer and pigs and a Lyman 405 gr FP for elk and bear. I have been using these bullets for over 20 years and have killed quite a few animals with them. All loads were loaded with black powder.
