Original Marlin 1895 45-90 loads

Post by borderdogs » Sat Jul 25, 2015 6:50 pm

I recently acquired a Marlin 1895 45-90 vintage 1896 and wanted to work on a smokeless load for it. There is not much info on 45-90 smokeless loads. The stuff I have seen recommends AA5744 which is near impossible to get. I would like to use a 300 grain bullet express load

So a question I was wondering is could you use 45-70 loads and use them in a 45-90 case? I probably will not start to work on a load for the rifle until the fall but I am just doing research. I have used H4895 in 45-70 with jacketed 300 grain bullets and want to do something similar with this one.

Suggestions?
Thanks,
Rob Drummond

Rob.
I have tried 5744,3031,H4831,4198 and 2400 in my 86 Winchester.Unique works the best, 15 grs. with a Lyman 457121 bullet. This load came out of a Lyman Ideal Reloading manual #39.Hope this helps.

I have 2 old Marlin levers in 45-90. What works best for me is 48 gr IMR4895 & a 325 gr cast bullet. Also 29 gr 2400 & a 300 gr cast bullet. The marlins had a 1in 20 twist so they shoot better with heavier bullets but then you get more recoil.

Jorge, that thread is 3+years old, sadly.
