38-55 WCF Case Lenght

Postby Gene » Mon Jun 15, 2009 10:18 am

Would anyone know if the Model 1894 Winchester, manufactured around 1899 or 1900, chambered for 38-55 WCF, should use the short 2.082 case or the longer 2.125 case?
I don’t have the rifle close at hand to check it, and I can’t seem to find a definitive answer doing I-net searches.
I haven’t seen anything new posted on this in the last couple three years, and was wondering if anyone has tried the new longer Starline cases, and how well they worked?
Tnx,

Gene

I hope a person knowledgable about the 38-55, comes along, and answers your question.

I have two 38-55's, a Marlin 336 CB, and a Winchester/Miroku high Wall. I need to know the length each uses... I hope it's the same for both.

Original guns in this caliber, Ballards, Early '94 Wins, Model 1893 Marlins SHOULD have the longer chambers. Only sure way to determine is do a chamber cast

I had an H&R chamber reamed to use the Starline 2.125 brass. No issues

Tnx John Boy,

I was able to dig up the 5th edition of Cartridges Of The World and Lyman's 47th edition Reloading Handbook. Both of these books show a case length of 2.129, using the Winchester 94. But, like you say, a chamber cast is the best way to go.

Stillwater,

Neither of these two books mention the Marlin 336CB or the newer High Wall. Cartridges Of The World does mention, like what John Boy says, that the Marlin 1893 should have this longer chamber.

Chamber casting could get to be a habit.

Y'all take care,

Gene

It looks like that is the wave of the future, at least for me, in the near future...

Thank you for responding to me...

I don't think the SAAMI specs have ever changed so the 2.12 case should be standard in any old or new rifle. But only a casing will really tell.
