Whitney Phoenix 1874 Sporter
Whitney Phoenix 1874 Sporter
The barrel is stamped 38 cal CF. It does not seem to be a 38-55 or a 38-40 or 38WCF. Any ideas what the cartridge might be?

Whitney Phoenix
I have a Phoenix marked the same way. I did a chamber cast and found it to be a 38 Ballard extra long.
You can use 357 max. brass and .358dia., 158gr. cast bullets and have a lot of fun plinking.
I also have one marked 40 cal., 50gr. CF (40/50 Sharps Bottle Neck).
These guns are a lot of fun.
Hope this helps.
