Stock Finishing

Post by shovel80 » Mon Jul 28, 2014 7:28 pm

I have a new CPA on Order with unsanded and Unfinished wood. I'm curious what others have to say about their favorite techniques/types of Oil Finishes to use on their new Stocks.

Thanks, Terry

I used hand rubbed alkanet (red root) based oil. Classic London finish.

I have used many different things, including the old homebrew of spar varnish, boiled linseed oil and turpentine. But in the end, I keep coming back to Permalyn from Laurel Mt. Forge and sold by many dealers (e.g., trackofthewolf.com). This is an oil finish but it has a little bit of polyurethane in it which gives it a bit more toughness while losing nothing in the way of the old rubbed oil or built-up oil finish that is so characteristic of 19th century English and American firearms.

as for techniques of applying the oil, ANY oil based finish is well served by following the directions that come with a bottle of Pilkington's Classic Gunstock Finish. Pilkington's is sold by Brownells among others, but I like the directions more than the finish itself.

For some rifles, esp if using black walnut, I add a bit of red cherry dye or stain from Track of the wolf. I don't recall the details about it, but I can look it up if you wish.
