1879 Argentine RB to 45-90?? Same Barrel contour??

Post by Rayolamp » Sat May 17, 2014 10:14 pm

I have a very nice 1879 Argentine RB in 43 Spanish. Very accurate for what it is, however with the cost of brass I'm considering having it rebarreled to either a 45-70 or 45-90. Both are a lot cheaper than 43 spanish brass!

Now my question. I really do not want a full on make over of this RB, wood is in excellent condition (full military form) as is the hardware. I really like the looks of it in military form! Tang is already drilled and set up with a long range tang sight. Barrel is 36 inches.

What I'd like to do is replace the barrel with one having the same contour as the original barrel but shortened to 34 inches, that way the original wood can be used with all the original hardware. Easier to shorten the forearm than replace all the wood!

With that being said, could this be done , (think I already know the answer!)

Also are there any good gunsmiths in Colorado who could do such a job? Really do not want to ship it out of state!

I can't address any of the questions you have. I simply have no direct knowledge of rolling block rifles.
But, there is one thing I have heard about ... which you may not know.

You might have to modify the nose of your hammer in order to get a 45/90 cartridge to slip into the chamber.
For that reason, choosing a 45/70 chamber should save you some headache.

I have a Pedersoli RB in 45/90 and like M C said , you might have to trim the nose of the hammer .I don't on mine but if I set the bullet out like a Money bullet should ,I have to pull the hammer back as I load the round or be real care full loading it .

If you're dead set on giving up on the 43 mauser barrel, you can contact Oregon Barrel Co, and have them cut you a 45 caliber barrel to the same countour.
For a Colorado gunsmith you might start with Sulphur Gulch gunsmithing in Parker.

Barrel liner? Could be a posibility? Could have it rebored to 45-70 but would probably have to have the barrel set back a bit due to the 43 spanish chamber?

Why not simply use 45-90 Brass, trim to lenght and fireform, is the way Y use my Argentine Rolling Blocks.
