Stevens 44 rechamber

Post by pjogrinc » Sat Sep 26, 2009 11:34 pm

I'm looking at a 44 that was 25-20 SS and some IDIOT ran a 25-20 WCF reamer into the chamber. Is there any other 25 cal cartridge that this could be chambered too ??

Nothing that would be safe in the 44 action.
Best options would be to have the barrel set back and rechambered to 25-20 SS or 25-20 WCF, or have the barrel relined to either caliber.

Depending on the twist and you might need to rework the extractor, but the 25-35 winchester , might be an opton.

I am thinking the .25-35 is a little too stout for the 44 action.

.22 Hornet is too much for the 44. .25 Hornet would also be too much. Stevens put the Hornet in the 44 for a year or two and dropped it because the actions loosened up quickly.

John Taylor from Wa state might be able to sleeve and rechamber the barrel if you wanted. His price is reasonable.

I would highly recomend John Taylor. He converted a 44 from .22 LR to .22 Mag for me by rellining and rechambering. Good work at fair prices and nice guy to deal with. He is on the ASSRA website a lot and I have never seen a negative comment there on him. If he says it will work, it will work and he will do the job right.
