44

Is there an easy way to tell a Stevens 44 from a 44 1/2?

And does the 44 action develop the "lever droop" that some of the other Stevens actions have?

Stevens 44 vs 44 1/2

The difference is really easy to see. If you look at the bottom of the receiver with the lever open, on a 44 you will not see the breech block protrude, on the 44 1/2 the breech block will drop below the bottom of the receiver. There are also some other differences such as a removable lower tang on the 44 1/2, but some of the 44's also had these when they were available with a DST. The 44 will develop a droop if it is a gun that is well worn, can normally be fixed with a new link and pins or even just the pins.
