New CPA rifle

Post by Big Steve » Mon Jun 02, 2008 8:59 pm

I placed an order today for a new CPA rifle. I feel pretty good about it. The .22 silhouette matches at Mexia, Texas have really intrigued me.

I ordered it in .22 LR. with a Shilen ratchet barrel. I don't need another BPCR rifle at this time or I would have ordered it with a big-bore barrel also. I guess that I always can get one in the future. (I doubt if I will ever take it apart) 28" half round bbl. polished, silhouette stock fitted and sanded with standard wood, no finish, color case hardened, ball and spur lever, Neidner steel butt plate, MVA globe front sight and MVA rear base. Very standard.

Now that I write this, I have started thinking that a barrel chambered in .25-20 ss would be fun to play with.

Anyway, any thoughts? It's not too late to make a change or two.

Thanks,
Steve Harris

... a 32-40 would be an excellent caliber for an additional CPA barrel.

re: 25-20 SS ... I made up a 25-20 WCF gallery rifle that is accurate and fun to shoot. Did find that leading can be a problem (especially near the chamber) until one finds the right recipe that the bore likes.

For gallery, I had to use 1:40 alloy

Down to the hardest part. It's been 4 1/2 months since my order was placed. Based upon what I've read here, I assume that I should (hopefully) have my new CPA rifle within the next couple of weeks. Can't wait. I haven't had this much fun since waiting on my Shiloh Sharps.

mriisj - yes, I received my new rifle and am very pleased.
The Shilen .22 barrel shoots.

Thanks Al,
When Don Coffey gets home from Alaska, we will try to start making some of the .22 matches.

Steve thanks’ nice rifle, I am still waiting for mine, is your 22 rifled all the way through or is it back bored for a shorter rifling?

Michael - My barrel is rifled the full 28" length. 5 shot groups of Eley Match at 100 yards into less than 1" groups the first time out. It shot Tenex about the same. I really need to complete the finish on the wood and go shoot it for a week to get used to it.

I am having ideas about a 16 twist 45-70 barrel made for it. I like the rifle much more than I was expecting.

Sorry about the little photo.
