22 RF barrel length

Post by white owl » Fri Jun 29, 2007 8:55 pm

If you were going to get a 22 RF barrel for your Stevens, for formal target shooting (RF silhouette, and Schuetzen), what length would you get?

I shoot a 30" barrel for my other calibers (40/65 and 40/70), but it seems that a 30" barrel wouldn't be needed for a 22 RF.

Would you recommend doing some calculations to get the 22 RF barrel close to the same weight as the bigger calibers? Or just get something in the 26" to 28" range?

Or is it better to go even shorter?

Any and all comments appreciated.

I would get the barrel exactly the same size, length, and contour as my other barrels. Then I would have it backbored at about 1/2 inch diameter till the .22 barrel is only 16 inches long inside. Or, have it bored out without rifling, and a liner installed that is 16 inches long. That should give you the ultimate in accuracy and velocity, as 16 inches maximizes velocity but has the minimum time in the barrel for the bullet, so shaking and movement affect it the least during follow through. That would be particularly good for offhand. By backboring it to 1/2 inch, the weight will turn out nearly identical to your other calibers.

Hmmm.........interesting.

That would also probably make for a quieter report, especially with subsonic ammo.

I wonder if there are any Schuetzen rules regarding it.

It's legal in schuetzen competition. There's some rifles like that out there being used. Go to the ASSRA board at assra.com and go to the forums and post there in the gunsmithing section or in the general section. You'll get a lot of comments on this topic there!

I have such a rifle and I'll shoot it against any .22 out there. Out to 200 yds, I'll shoot it against any centerfire too. Offhand or off the bench.

Buy a good barrel for the liner. I use a Lilja.
