Trapdoor conversion to .22LR

Post by sharps54 » Sat Jun 21, 2008 7:04 am

Let me start by saying I would never do this to a complete original rifle. That said I have a rifle on the way that is not a collector's piece that I would like to convert to .22 LR. I know this has been done in the past and would like any information anyone has on converting one. I hate to reinvent the wheel if I don't have to! I am thinking a 16 to 20 inch liner (leaving the rest of the barrel .45 so I have a shorter barrel time) but I'm not sure the best way to do the chamber. An "adaptor cartridge" that holds the .22 at the end and has a firing pin running through it? Or do I run the liner back through the existing chamber? Of course I won't be doing the work but it would be nice to have already done the homework before I pass this on to my gunsmith buddy.

Thanks in advance,
Jason

BTW in case you are wondering the reason is so I can practice at the local indoor range when my schedule doesn't allow me to get to the outdoor range. I compete in the N-SSA (Civil War weapons) and plan on putting the action in a CW musket stock, duplicating the sights on my front loader and having a .22 trainer for my muzzleloading rifled-musket!

Sonny France has one converted to .22 by H.M.Pope. It is a real beauty, and shoots like a match rifle. You can email him at sirplus70@yahoo.com.

Ranch 13,
Thanks, I'll do that as well. I'm still waiting for that rifle to show up but my "shooter" 1884 came in yesterday! :D
