43 Egyptian

Post by longcaribiner » Mon Jul 17, 2006 9:38 pm

I actually came across a 43 Egyptian with a good bore. Toyed with the idea of setting the barrel back and rechambering for amother cartridge that is same bore. A friend of mine switched his 43 Reformado to a 44-100 Wesson as I recall. I can't imagine the shells or dies are any cheaper.

I have a good 457 barrel around. I already have a 45-70 loading outfit. The trigger pull on the roller is pretty light.

The worst part about this deal has been the cost of the dies.
50-70 starline brass is working pretty well, but just a tad short, trimming up 50-90 would probably be a little better.
I casting the 43 mold from RCBS it comes out right at .448 which is spot on bore size, a good semi spitzer .450 would be just the ticket.
Haven't really put it down on paper, but Shorty does a pretty good job of scaring the snot out of, and occasionally thumping, the 450 yd bathtub, with the whole mess.
Going to try and get her to take a poke at the 750 and 1000yd targets with it.

.348 brass for the .43 Egyptian

Post by Kodiak » Wed Jul 19, 2006 5:23 pm

Don,

upon going thru some old G.I. ammo boxs I had under the loading-bench, I have found 4 boxes of new (probally in the '60s or '70s) of Winchester white box unprimed .348 brass. It has never been loaded. Do you still need this type of brass? I'm sure we can work out something, if you want it.

Jim 348 brass is just a bit small in the case head. Thanks for the offer tho.
Did you get a leftover app sent?

My copy of Handloaders' Manual of Cartridge Conversions says to use .475 No.2 NE to form cases. Back in the 1980's I met a guy from Va, that set the barrel back about 1.25 inches and rechambered for 43 Mauser. The bore is .002 too large, but with soft lead that may be nothing.
