Choosing the right bullet

I'm curious about y'alls process for identifying the right bullet for your loads. Assuming that most, if not all, serious BPCR shooters cast their own, do you start with buying pre-cast in various weight and design and then buy a mold that matches what works best? Or do you just buy a bunch of diffe...

Cool, thanks y'all. Just wanted to check. I'll give it a shot, as it were.

Good reason not to use 3f?

Forgive the potentially dumb question; I'm still very new to BPCR and and researching the best way to get started with reloading. I see that most sources I have read and most folks here suggest/use either 1 1/2 F or 2F powder for their 45-70 loads. While I've read a few that use 3F, it doesn't seem ...

Re: a little guidance for first time reloader

Thanks Brent. So when making the lube, is this for grease cookies or just to lube the grooves of the bullets? The bullets I have now have one large groove near the base with a red-colored substance that I think is some kind of lube (probably for smokeless), but it has flaked off pretty easy on a cou...

Re: a little guidance for first time reloader

Thanks y'all. My goal right now is simplicity; just being able to load a straightforward cartridge without tons of "unnecessary" extras. Thing is, I don't really know what's considered "unnecessary" (and I know what's necessary is relative to what you want to accomplish). That being said, what's the...

a little guidance for first time reloader

( I think this is the better forum, but mods please feel free to move if needed ) I recently got a Pedersoli Sharps in .45-70, and a friend/mentor who was cleaning out some of his stuff gave me a Lee Loader and a box of 300 grain cast lead RNFP bullets. http://leeprecision.com/lee-loader-45-70-govt....

Re: Two questions from a total newbie

Okay, thanks for the tips guys. The rifle is a Pedersoli, and I was able to find the manual online. Brent's comment and the manual together helped me figure out which screws on the trigger plate to adjust. I've still got some fine tuning to do, but it shoots safely. A couple obligatory pics. "There ...

Two questions from a total newbie

I have just been given a gift of a 1874 Sharps that belonged to one of my father's closest friends, who passed away a few years ago. The gentleman had a very large collection of various guns, though he was in poor health and didn't shoot some of them. If this rifle was shot, it was not much. It's on...

uberti 1874 Sharp's Hunter

Does anyone know much about the Uberti Sharp's Hunter model? There's one on gun broker that's going well below most (about $700 right now). Usually this screams "stay away!" but I've always heard good things about Uberti. Normally it seems to list for around $1100-1200. It's a 28" round barrel, but ...

I stand corrected. It does kinda open up the possibilities for acceptable rifles to use, such as the Browning 1885 w/o the extended tang.

I asked that same question a while back. The answer I got was basically that it is physically possible, but not a great idea if you are planning to shoot much competitively. Wood tends to swell, shrink, and move depending on weather. Areas where the wood is thinner, such as the wrist, are more prone...

From everything I've heard, it does really well. Most animal oils do. The thing about it is that I believe that whale based products are currently illegal to import or manufacture in the U.S., so getting it is nearly impossible, thus making it extremely valuable.
