New-to-me Stevens 418

I just got my first Stevens, a Walnut Hill 418. Cosmetically, it looks immaculate (mostly anyway; it's got a couple of handling dings in the stock, but it's an 80-ish-year-old rifle). https://beta-static.photobucket.com/images/q431/j_robertparker/0/52d51edd-fa68-4317-ae29-e73066d77f93-original.jpg?w...

Re: CPA 44 1/2 Photo thread

Here's my Dad's CPA Silhouette in .40-65. I've only shot it once, but it sure is nice.

Re: Baby wipes

I used these for the first time this week, and they worked great. I use the Huggies ones that are in bulk from Costco ('cause that's what we're using for my 2-y.o.). Cleaned up the bore nicely, and let me only having to swab the bore with a couple patches with Shooter's Choice once I got home.

Re: Any .22lr BPCR matches near Baltimore

That used to be 2 hours from me. I live near Baltimore, MD now. Guess I should change my profile!

However, my in-laws live near Alma, so I'll keep that in mind next time I visit them. Thanks!

Any .22lr BPCR matches near Baltimore

I just bought a Stevens 418. I've been wanting a .22lr falling block for a while, and I see some discussions of the .22 BPCR matches. Are there any within an hour or two of Baltimore? The only place I've seen do regular BPCR much near me is Ridgeway, and in my time of life I can't easily take a 6 ho...

Re: Are my cases ruined?

Ok, thanks! I'm still getting the hang of BP cartridge processes. I never let a gun sit longer than a few hours after the past shot, but it's always been muzzleloaders and c&b revolvers before.

Are my cases ruined?

So after a day at the range, I totally forgot about my empties that I had left sitting in a water and dish soap bath. I mix up some soapy water to drop my empties in after each shot and just have it in old milk jug. But I blanked and left them in there for over a week before I remembered. Th...

Re: Looking for feedback on first casting results

Thanks again. I've had a few free minutes this morning and did essentially what you just mentioned after reading several other folks say the same. I cast a few dozen tapping the mold joint between each. While the out-of-roundness improved, it didn't go away. I got down to about .0015" out (.4585 one...

Re: Looking for feedback on first casting results

Thanks Brent. I checked Las night and do indeed have lead splatter on the mating surfaces. I mic'ed my bullets and they're out of round by about .003", so I'll melt them down and start over. The splatter didn't come off when I heated the mold, but I want to be careful. How would you suggest I clean ...

Looking for feedback on first casting results

I just finished my first batch of cast bullets, and I'd love some thoughts on what I could do to improve. I'm loading for a Pedersoli Sharps in .45/70. The alloy I mixed was 20/1 lead to lead-free solder (95/5 tin and antimony) - I basically mixed 20lb of scuba weights and roofing flashing with 1 lb...

Re: Black powder in combat

Someone more knowledgeable can correct me, but in the era of Napoleonice tactics (i.e., late 1700s to early 1800s), armies got relatively close to one another before opening fire, they would fire volleys, and ranks would take turns firing, reloading, and advancing toward the enemy. The end result I ...

Re: Let me get this straight

Thanks guys. I made one single round last night to make sure I was good with the process. I used one .03" wad over the powder and compressed .15". Doing do, I had no issues using the upside-down case to cut the cookie. In fact, I dropped the case by accident when turning it over and had no issues. I...

Re: Let me get this straight

I'll add onto this thread, hoping that my question is in the same vein, rather than a hijack. I'm about to load my first rounds with BP, using a supply of 300 grain cast bullets. (I know that's not a preferred weight in my rifle - same one as the OP - but they were free). Since the bullets only have...

What consistency for Emmert's

I just made my first batch of Emmett's and realized I'm not certain what it's supposed to feel like. I did the 5/4/1 ratio of beeswax, crisco, and canola oil, and it came out nice and smooth in texture, which I assume is good. After letting it cool, it feels much firmer than I expected, though. If I...

Re: Choosing the right bullet

Thanks for the tips. Chris, my rifle is a Pedersoli Sharps in .45-70 with a 30" bbl. So it's a pretty common rifle. I live in central Maryland, so most of my shooting opportunities will be under 300 yards, more often 200 and less. I may be able to get out to shoot 400-500 yards once a year or so. So...
