Re: Recommendation for beam or electronic powder weight scale

I have to agree with Plainbase. Mine goes back to the 60's when I retired the oil damping Pacific scales. A electronic is only as good as the power regulation and the person with that golder screwdriver took the time setting it. I use electronics but I check them with the Ohaus 10-10

Re: Finally a day without rain

Brent I didn't put a paper target up I just shot at the singers at the 200 yard line to empty the cases. There was just a silver spot on the black 1" thick plates 6X10". A friend had a bowling pin hanging on a shepherds hook so I asked if I could take a shot at it and he said go for it :) what a mis...

Finally a day without rain

It was a fine day when I got up with the sun after better than a foot of rain solar this month I took the .50 Shiloh out of the iron box and went to the range. I have a couple hundred rounds left over from the 2008 Quigley and the bullets are gray from age like me. :) I been shooting the .44's and t...

Re: Case separation.

Is there any sign that the case mouth is getting pulled into the throat from being too long? I formed some .44 - 3.25 Bell basic brass for the .44-90 bn and breach seated the bullets for blowing the shoulders out but I trimmed them .010" too long that pulled the neck into the throat and it pulled th...

Re: How much is too much Leade. ?

I would advice against a .230" gap between the wad and bullet. It's a disaster possible. It might or might not show up after the first shot but the potential is there. Keep in mind, when that powder is lit it's a good chance the bullet will be wall to wall in the chamber. But I breach seat a groove ...

Re: Figure of Merit and Accuracy

Brent that is a good way. I look at the average even when I see 4-6" groups at 200. With 2" or 3" that land out the group the average can still be good.
You can still shoot 8's, 9's and 10 and get a couple 7 will still win the match with a average 3 MOA :)

Re: How much is too much Leade. ?

Brian If he is doing this I would use caution not to go too deep and I would not use a wad like felt because they are not dense enough. If the bullet is, say .458/9" and the cylinder freeborn is .460 or plus a little I would not worry about needing extra wads because the bullet would obturate tase e...

Re: How much is too much Leade. ?

IMG_0317 copy.jpeg When you say freebore, are you referring to a cylinder or a tapered ? there is a difference in the way they perform. I have rifles with all three different chamber ends, 45 degree, cylinder, and tapered (funnel) plus tapered compound throats. 40-65 browning copy.jpeg Here is a 4 ...

Re: 38-50 vs. 38-56

I had a .38-56 back in the 70's but it was a 86 Win. and it only had the barrel sights but it shot well. But back then I still had eyes that needed no corrections. I loaded the rounds with black and smokeless powder and both loads shot well. as far as long range accuracy I cant say because I never s...

Re: Powder moisture one more time

I might give it a try. I have some Swiss in two different lots as well some OE 2 and 1.5 F. I just started a new lot of 2F OE and worked up several 5 shot ladder loads for the .45-90 and 84 and 85 grain loads will throw one shot out out of the group that is 2" or less out 1-1/2"- 2" and it's startin...

Re: cookie cutter

Why mess around with a cookie cutter that will do nothing but stick a pile of lube wads together on a pile and get deformed when you pick them up. Get a 12" shallow straight walled round cake pan put it on a hot plate with a little water in it and some lube and let it simmer for a while till all lub...

Re: Paper rings

Brent I had that happen a few times with my .40-70 and I think your right about the case being to close to the 45 degree chamber end. Also I think it also has something to do with the patch folded under not far enough that keeps the wad from catching both wraps with a shallow seated bullet. That mad...
