Kerosene works well with wet or dry sanding paper; cheap, easy to get and won't rust.

My Shilohs have the large firing pin on one and the small two piece pin on the other. The older rifle with the large one was made in 1978 as a prototype by Shiloh and is still intact. The small one hasn't broke with about 5000 shots so far. Either would be easy to replace by removeing the breech blo...

The roller type action is fine for this sport assuming it's in good repair and used correctly. That said the question asked is "which is better" and I maintain the one that fits you and your needs. On the strength point artillery is built with a sliding breech as is the Sharps but none to my knowleg...

Both makes are fine but the Sharps are stronger and more commonly found with set triggers. I find the stocks handle better on the Sharps for me but you'll have to see what suits you best. I also perfer the breech to be held shut by reciever rather then the hammer. Either will work for this sport as ...

My 50 / 90 Sharps with badger barrel wouldn't shoot well with any thing but very heavy (read slow) bullets till I begain lightly crimping on a 443 grain 515141 lyman bullet. This with 105 grains of 1f shoots very well. This is a hunting weight rifle and recoil is stout but not horrible.

On the question of broken firing pins in Sharps I have as yet not broken one. I have an old Shiloh with the large origial style pin and a eight year old one with the small two piece style. Both aren't shot as much as some of fellows on this site shoot their's but the newer one has over 2000 rounds s...

I have used a type writer eraser to clean my molds. This thing looks like a pencil but the core is eraser. A bit of rubbing and the lead comes off with no harm to the steel or cast iron.

WTB percussion Shiloh military rifle

I'm looking for a 1859 or 1863 Shiloh Sharps military rifle. It must be a Shiloh and in 54 calibre and not be altered with improved sights or altered breech block. Well used but cared for is fine.

By your other posts you have an original rifle and there arn't any more being made. I wouldn't bastardise it in any way. Buy a replica and mount a tang site on it and keep the origial as is.

Both are fine cartridges but my pick is the 45/70 the reasons include the 45/70 is easier to get good loads worked up and will work better at longer ranges if you ever feel the need. Also should you decide to hunt with the rifle a standard load in the 45 is enough for most anything. Not to short the...

Bear vrs 50 X 2 1/2"

Had a fine hunt in Alaska for black bear. The 50 Sharps did first rate work on this old fellow which the guides estimated at 400 lbs and is just over 6 foot. Busted the front right leg and it exited the left small ribs. I had walked in on him and he turned towards me at 30 steps. 443 grain bullet ov...
