Sight Question

Last year this is what the Buffalo at the Quigley looked like in my front globe through my MVA Soule sight with windage cranked all the way over. Buffalo at 805 yds in near 40mph wind.jpg I told myself then that next year I'd show up with the #103 Long Range Buffalo sight with the added windage: htt...

Re: lubing bullets does it get old?

I've seen a kind of leaching when storing lubed bullets in a plastic ammo tray, even with SPG. Have taken to wrapping all my lube, lube cakes and lubed bullets in cellophane if they are gonna sit a while for fear some evaporation or drying out might occur. Used to lube a lot and put those bullets sh...

Ian, Did you get my last PM over there on ASSRA? If you got steve’s drawing by now then your copy is better than the file version I was gonna send you. Mine must have been a picture I took of his drawing at his shop. Forgot I even had it! I modified mine reamer very little (think I tightened the nec...

Re: DZ or MVA Scope

just getting back to this. Didn't realize it had some more pictures added. Thanks Kurt!

Got a DZ finally. If I add one later I suppose I might go with the 23 inch MVA with the #2 mounts recommended here for the 22 and keep the DZ on the 45-70.

Re: New Alloy

That's impressive Kurt. With the level of effort I've no doubt the holes will look just as impressive. I'm not PPing yet but not sure how many years i'd have in to it before I thought about trying to upset just the bottom third or so with the intent of keeping perfect alignment. Impressive! If we ev...

Re: Bullet to Groove Diameter

Don, I'm pretty set on reducing the weight on a couple of old classics. I have the Ideal 457132 Postell and the Lyman 457121 on my screen trying to reduce the weight to around 475gr (about 88% of the original 535 weight) but trying to still remain as close to the original radius and nose profile as ...

Re: Bullet to Groove Diameter

Thanks for the replies fellas. That question of what happens when the charge goes off is one reason I was going back and forth between .458 and .459 (for the record, I never entertained undersized bullets and no one was lobbying me to do so). The "obturation" seems to almost negate the need for that...

Re: Bullet to Groove Diameter

martinibelgia, appreciate the response. I am indeed contending with the other variables. Interesting to note I just had a similar report from an experienced PP shooter with a bullet patched smaller than bore diameter that performed very well and it surprised me. I had thought before his report that ...

Bullet to Groove Diameter

Just curious about opinions of those shooting grease groove bullets and BP.

Do the majority order molds/use bullets that are a thousands oversize or do you prefer a groove size bullet?

Re: Chamber: Ballard Rifle & Cart Co 40-65

Thanks fellas, I'll work on the chamber specs Chris.

And I see the Saeco available at Montana Bullet Works with SPG lube so I can try some before buying a mould. Appreciate it.

Might try that Gov't bullet too if the 480s are not too punishing and if it works with the chamber.

Re: Chamber: Ballard Rifle & Cart Co 40-65

Chris (if you happen on this again), just snagged another one. This time in 45-70. Was happy to find it weighs almost 11 & 1/2 lbs. Was afraid it would be more like 10+ lbs. If anyone has suggestions for a bullet profile south of 500gr I'm all ears. Was thinking I might try to find or draw up someth...

Re: DZ or MVA Scope

I don't see a dimes worth of difference between the DZ and the MVA B5 target mounts, in terms of ease of use, however. I've had both and opted for the B5 in the end. When you refer to MVA scopes or mounts, it matters a lot exactly which MVA scopes or mounts you are referring too. They are very very...

Re: Ya ever wonder?..

This is aged by some months but a good topic in itself, especially for a fellah who has only been shooting BP for about a year and a half. Guys that ignore advice or reply with their own after asking a question can be frustrating. We've all seen it. But I like Brent and Don's approach. I personally ...

Re: Little input/help: Swiss and 40-65

Brad, Thanks for the input. Kinda late in following up since I've been traveling. Figure I'll get back to looking for loads soon enough but since time was pressing I bailed on the Swiss and loaded with the OE I was more familiar with. 55gr of 2f gave better performance than I did. Have no idea if ho...
