Wads under Paper-patch bullets

Hello, I have a question about the use of wads under a bore sized paper-patched bullet using black powder. Loading is for a .40-70 2 1/2" straight ctg. If I use a hard veg. fiber wad under the bullet, but use a softer wad under that..say a felt wad, and or Puff-Lon filler..in order to reduce case ca...

.40-90 Sharps Straight

Does anyone have experience with this ctg.? Something I have always wanted to try..is it too much of a good thing? Howe about papr-patching? Does this ctg. have any merit as a long-range target ctg.? Thanks!

Re: Wad punch

heating the tube & quenching as you describe will harden it...if there is enough carbon present in the steel tube to begin with. If it's plain low carbon steel, it won't harden. Try & see what you get. You could case-harden using Casenite or whatever Brownells sells.

Re: Bore dia. vrs. groove dia, P.P.?

If you order a mould from Steve Brooks, he will make it to your alloy..I believe his std. alloy for B.P. is 30-1 lead/tin.

Re: Bore dia. vrs. groove dia, P.P.?

I have the Staedtler tacing paper..bought it on clearance rack at local drafting supply. I have been using this thin (.0014"..or if Starrett ratched is used,.0012") paper for patching samples for the original Ballard A-1 Mid-Range .40-63 Everlasting. With it's larger .404" bore, I am using a .398" d...

Bore dia. vrs. groove dia, P.P.?

I have a Remington rolling block with a .40-70 (2 1/2" str. .30-40 Krag stretched brass), .400 bore (land-land) .408 groove. So far, only shot g.g. action original so only real black..Swiss 1 1/2 or Olde Enysford is used. I have been playing around with p.p. this winter and have patched bore dia. sa...

Re: training with the 22

Heres what I did...Always being interested in the 1000yd. Creedmoor matches of the 1800's, but with my work constraints..probably have to wait awhile before being able to take part in these long range matches..I did the next best thing. My home range is only 100yds. so I reduced to scale the origina...

Question for P.P. experts

I ordered custom turned brass cases from RMC for my original Ballard .40-63 Everlasting..had them make case mouth I.D. .406" for a nice snug fit for bore dia.+.001" patched bullet. Then I started thinking of another .40 cal. BPCR I have. This one is kind of interesting..it's an original Remington ro...

Re: Ballard A-1 Mid-Range

This is kind of late..just came across my original post from last march. I was able to take rifle to 100yd. range in August as the .40-70 Bertrum brass from Bufallo Arms came in...but I wasn't ready yet for paper-patching so what to do?? I recently had came across an Ideal 406150 mould. Cast from a ...

I have an original Remington rolling block Short-Range rifle in this caliber. Haven't yet tried Holy black in it..but using 4759, it is my most accurate BPCR rifle using this powder. Years ago, I spoke with Carmen Axtell about Silhouette..she used one of her 77' sharps chambered in this ctg. and cla...

Oiling bore for P.P.?

There is mention of the Creedmoor shooters lightly oiling bore after cleaning and prior to loading next P.P. ctg. Has anyone tried this? Wonder what type of oil? They probably used sperm oil, wonder if castor or Jo Joba oil would work? Thanks.

Ballard A-1 Mid-Range

Well, I finally was able to get the old girl out to the range last weekend. This is an original Ballard Mid-Range what I thought was a .40-70 Ballard...more on this later. The bore dia. slugs .404 with a groove dia. of .409..definatly cut for P.P. First time out I was mainly looking to fire form bra...

Re: .450/.400 3 1/4" N.E.

Ok, found some notes from a few years back...SR 4759 powder gave best accuracy with the Lyman 412263 300gr. P.B. bullet. charges were 20.0gr. up to 22.0gr grouping in 1" at 50yds. but shooting 10" to 12" high. The heavy start load I mentioned was not with 5744 but was IMR 3031. 50grs. IMR 3031 gave ...
