Re: Color Case Hardening

A couple of years ago I acted as an adviser to an American who had bought an original Sharps Borchardt action with factory DST's. It needed work but the end result was nothing short of magnificent. The CC Hardening was done by Shiloh Sharps of Big Timber Montana. Ring them for a quote, the contact d...

Re: H&R Buffalo Classic question

Hello Scooter, If your using standard 45/70 loads and the action opens or even partially opens I would ship it back to the manufacturer for either having it put right or replacing it. If however your loads approach high velocity Varmint rifle speeds I would cut back a little on the powder. Best buy ...

Re: Dimensions required for a set trigger screw.

Well it's now 13 months since I started this thread with a simple qestion. After that, the plot as they say, thickened and the owner of the action contacted me for advice regarding building it into a fully operational Sporting rifle again. I supplied him with some of the pictures of Borchardt Sporti...

Re: A difference of opinion.

Gentlemen, Many thanks for your replies. Montana-Charlie, I think there is a slight difference between the flight of a football and that of a Long Range Creedmoor Bullet and that its running out of steam may be due to a poor throw and of course the vast differences in velocity. OPS I think your repl...

A difference of opinion.

A friend and myself were having a difference of opinion the other day on the subject of bullet flight. His opinion is that in Long Range (1,000yds) shooting, the bullet followed the ballistic trajectory along the centre line of the bullet and that on reaching the apex of that trajectory nosed over o...

Re: The Rifle Smith/ Axtel ??

Sadly it's the old, old tale. An elderly man takes to the young Mexican help and disappears into the sunset with her. I understand that Carmen got the business and Tom the lady? I got this from more than one of my American contacts.

Re: Dimensions required for a set trigger screw.

Hello Dave, Your correct the action did come from your shop. Thanks for letting me know what screws you tried, I had a sneaking that it may have been a none-standard screw thread by todays standards. I'll let my friend know and follow your suggestion about re-tapping the thread to a modern machine t...

Dimensions required for a set trigger screw.

Gentlemen, A couple of weeks ago an American internet friend of mine was fortunate to obtain a magnificent Sharps Borchardt 1878 Sporting Rifle action with the original Sharps DST's. It's perfect except for a missing screw off the set trigger. Does anyone have or have access to a Sharps Borchardt Ri...

Re: Source for Remington-Hepburn Firing Pins?

Besides the DZ Hepburns, is there a source for Remington-Hepburn firing pins? DZ sells them for $55, but I am looking for a source - like Wisners - that is less expensive than that. xtm Hello xtimberman, $10.00 will get you a full set of Remington Hepburn plans from the ASSRA Archive. These plans a...

Ben Shelor. R.I.P.

Ben Shelor, aka 'Tar Baby' and 'Phoenix' on some Firearms Forums of Newtown VA., passed away on 23.09.2009, aged 68, after a rapid series of strokes. I never met Ben in person, (we lived half a world apart) but I PM'd him and Emailed him on many occasions. He had a devilish sense of humour, was a ke...

Re: Sharp's letter?

The Sharps Rifle Company records do exist and are in the possession of a Dr. Labowski. Only the Borchardt 1878 Rifle records are fragmentary. There is a fee of I believe some US$ 200.00 to have your rifle 'lettered' but I understand he will pass the info to you by phone free gratis. Have a notepad a...

Re: Sharps Borchardt rear sight help

Hello pj etc, Yours is not an uncommon predicament. The Sharps sights haven't been manufactured for 130+ years but there may be some lying around in the 'odds and sods' boxes of home gunsmiths who modify such rifles for 'Varmint' or 'Long Range' shooting. Try advertising the the 'Wants Adds' on as m...
