Re: 38-56 Anyone?

I have had a 38-56 for many years. Mine is a C Sharps 1975 business rifle (they do not chamber this round anymore as far as I know). It has been a nice round and accurate as well. I mostly use it for short range (200 yard) shoots at my club and mostly shoot 250 gr slugs from it but I have fired some...

Re: Scopes

I have a leatherwood 6X18 mounted on one of my sharps rifles that I use primarily for 200 yard silhouette shooting. I use the rings that came with it and at 200 yards I do not have much elevation left in them. However, I have fired a lot of rounds through it and it seams to be holding together well ...

Re: Sharps rear sight for hunting

I have a Pedersoli Sharps that I use for hunting and I have it fitted with an Iron blade front sight that was made for a Lyman Great Plains rifle and I paint it white with white nail polish as for a rear sight I use a C Sharps Ideal tang sight. I have found that the white front sight shows up well i...

Re: Which sight? I am so confused.

I have used them all and they are all excellent sights. I own a MVA and friends own the other two you mention (as well as several you do not mention). You can not go wrong with any of them. If you plan to shoot 1000 yard get the long range sight of whatever make you want. The mid range sights run ou...

Re: Opinions on the different 1874 Sharps rifles

I have 74 Sharps rifles made by Shiloh, C Sharps, and Pedersoli and they are all well built rifles. The Shilohs and the C Sharps are top of the heap by a good amount but the Pedersoli gives good value for the buck. I bought the Pedersoli for a beater hunting rifle from Cabella's so that I did not ba...

Re: New Pedersoli Sharps....issues

I have one of those rifles and the lever spring was very stiff. I took the fore stock off and loosened the lever spring screw. I then made a shim out of half a flat washer and installed it in front of the lever spring screw and tightened the screw. This put it in at a slight angle and reduces the sp...

Re: How to read Buffington Sights

I know this is an old thread but I thought someone would like the answer here rather than surfing to another web sight. In an original 1884 or 1888 rifle with the buffington sight the sight is calibrated for the standard GI load of a 500 gr bullet and 70 gr of black powder. With the sight laying fla...

Re: rebarreling springfield trapdoor

I have seen several custom rifles built on a Trapdoor action. The latest is one a friend of mine bought from John King. I beleive it is in 44-70 caliber and has a half round barrel if I am remembering the right rifle. It is also setup with double set triggers. As near as I can tell this rifle is not...

Re: Sharps Hankin - the different Sharps

Yor DSharps and hankins is one made for the Navy During the civil War. I believe is was designed to take the 56-56 Spencer cartridge and the last time I had a Dixie gun works cataloge they sold brass shells that took a 22 shot case that could be reloaded and fired. You might check with them and see ...

Re: Recoil

You ordered a nice rifle and a good caliber for long range shooting my only suggestion would be that the montana rough rider has more drop of the butt stock than does a number 1 sporting rifle. This will give less cheak support at longer ranges and you will want to add more to your comb of the stock...

Re: Winchester / Browning Model 1885

Browning Owns Winchester and FN owns Browning. When Browning bought Winchester the started having the Miruco copies of Winchesters marked with Winchesters name. I Believe that Davidson buys their rifles from Browning and they are built with features that Davidson wants and then Davidson sells them t...

Re: Sharps rear sight for hunting

I had the same problem with iron sights in low light and solved my problem by purchasing new sights. I replaced the front sight with a combination Beach type front sight and the rear with an Ideal tang sight from C Sharps. The peep gave better target definition and the beach can be fliped from a bra...

Re: BPCR bullet history question

Except for the HB lee bullets the other 45 cal rifle bullets do not carry enough lube in the grooves to be good for BP. If you want to use them you should use a grease cookie under the bullet to add lube to the load. As for getting powder into the case you need a powder compression die. Now some pow...

Re: .22 Insert

I have both the shaver and the crosno liners and at least in my rifles there is no problem switching between rifles. The Crosno needs to be indexed properly to retain windage setting when installing and that is something of a pain to do. It also has a very tight chamber that wears out my thumb seati...

Re: 45-70 Smokeless question

You were smart to break the loads down as I do not trust anyones reloads except my own. As an asside the load you quoted would be ok in the H&R for sure but it would move you around a bit and I would not shoot it in a Sharps rifle as it is warmer than I would care to use in one of them. As for a com...
