Re: 1886 winchester

Thanks for the replies, fellas. My neighbor owns the gun and asked me to put it back together. I'm thinking about making him an offer for it and want to offer a fair price. I've learned that magazine tube is missing and the piece which holds it to the rifle is badley bent and probably will break if ...

1886 winchester

I am looking at a mod 1886 Winchester rifle in 40-65. the prior owner took it apart and removed all the blueing and case hardening with sandpaper and steel wool, and can't get it back together. Seems like all the parts are there and the internals show no sign of rust or wear. The exterior steel show...

where is bpcr headed?

I've been building and shooting BPCR guns since about 1980, and before that muzzleloaders. For several reasons I got out of shooting for a few years, sold some of my guns, and let my subscription to BPCR News expire. Recently I unlimbered my rifles and started shooting them again. I realized I was d...

I have patched lyman 125 bullets .459-.460 dia. with two layers of 9 lb wt Crane paper, then after the patch dries, run them through a .459" sizing die with just a little bullet lube on the paper, or sprayed with teflon spray. The sizing die does not mess up the patch, and they shoot about as well a...

45-70 loads

Back in 1974 (Lord, am I that old?), Ken Waters tested about ten different 45-70 rifles, using jacketed and cast bullets, and powders from 2400 to 4831. He made careful measurements of case expansion to guage pressure, and published the results in two parts in Handloader--March-April and May-June "7...

Need help with 38-55 project

I would appreciate the benefit of y'all's experience. I want too rebarrel a B-78 Browning to 38-55. I'm an "advanced plinker"--I may hunt deer with the rifle, and I'll use it for informal target shooting with cast bullets and black powder. I expect to use 264-300 gr bullets, and I want to seat them ...
