I have had best luck over the last 60+ years of casting to keep my 80+ molds in GI ammo cans (with Good lid gasket) between casting. No bullets left in cavities. I also have a few pieces of VPI rust inhibitor paper in the cans. The molds go back into the cans soon after they cool down. NO lube, etc ...

Tim, Have you checked the twist rate of that Orig 40-70 Ballard? Critical to match that with the bullet length that you choose. Many of the older rifles were a slower twist than our latest efforts for long range accuracy. For examply my own 40-72W (essentially same as 40-70SS, but 0.058" longer case...

35-55 brass can be made easily from 30-40 Krag brass.

The barrel twist for the Uberti made Cimarron Hi Wall 38-55W is 1:18, 0.373/0.379

They did also list at one time the Pedersoli Hi WaLL IN 38-55/ 12 twist.
But it is no longer listed at Cimarron.

I am still working on a 12# keg picked up about 30 yrs ago.
But, as said: 4227 also serves well, along with putzing with some 5744
Re 7 also works well for a lot ofpurposes in straight wall ctges.

In my case, a Ruger No 1B, cal 40-72w /12 twist , 460 gr bullet, 1320fps
Torque seems to be quite a problem with this one.

How does one gain control of that torque?
