Re: Wesson rechamber??
Use a Rem 357 max case, about .030 short. Just keep the loads to Black Powder specs.

Re: 25-20ss
The rifles I have a 'grouping' problem, all shoot sub 1.5 inch groups at 50 yards. I know they can do better. Some of it is me, flyers usually, all are definetely minute of rabbit, as they were designed to do. I just expect more! One of my rifles, Win Lowall, has well worn rifling and minor pitting ...

Re: 25-20ss
I have several 25-20SS guns. The Stevens 44 loves 7.0 gr of that nasty smokeless H4227 with a 89 grain cast FP. Shoots consistand clover leafs at 50 yards, have not tried 100 yds yet. The others shoot okay, but still working on loads. Now that the snow is gone, time to try some more. Remember that m...

Black Powder chamber pressure
Trying to figure out BP chamber pressures for rifle cartridges. Specifically, 40-70 SS, 40-60 Maynard, 35-40 Maynard, 25-20 SS. I know that 12 gauge BP runs around 7,000 PSI for a 1 1/8 oz 70 grain 2F load. I also know that, the smaller the bore the pressure goes up, but how much ?? Anyone know of a...

Maynard forearm screw hole
Being fairly new to Maynards, I have got some 1882 barrels, 2 with 9 inch flats and 1 with 3 inch flats and all have the forearm screw hole in them. My question is was this normal late production ??

Re: Winchester Lo Wall 25-20 SS
Most any 25-20 WCF load data will work. START AT THE LOW END AND WORK UP !!! My most accurate load is 7.0 grains H4227 (IMR4227 interchangeable), WSP primer, Lyman 89 grain GC pill in a Bertrum Brass, NEW production and only case neck tension. Bullet is engraving the rifling 0.050 inch. No case stre...

Stevens 44 rechamber
I'm looking at a 44 that was 25-20 SS and some IDIOT ran a 25-20 WCF reamer into the chamber. Is there any other 25 cal cartridge that this could be chambered too ??

Re: 44-90 Sharps Necked 2 7/16 Cartridge
Found it !!!
44-90 SBN 2 7/16 is the same case as the 44-77 SBN with the bullet seated out to the same OAL as the standard 44-90 SBN. It did not last very long due to the bullet being held in by 1/4 to 3/16 of an inch depending on which bullet was used.
TNKS for all your help !

Re: 44-90 Sharps Necked 2 7/16 Cartridge
WELL !!!! The Cerrosafe arrived today and just had to do a chamber cast. Doing a chamber cast removes all doubt ! It is confirmed, it is a 44-77 SBN with free bore for the paper patched bullet. Without the chamber cast it appeared optically using a caliper, that the cartridge length was actua...

Re: 44-90 Sharps Necked 2 7/16 Cartridge
Deleted duplicate post. Reslugged the barrel today, this time with an expanded .446 bullet, bore is .443 and grove is .451. The guy I got the gun from had good luck using .446 grease grove bullets made 30-1. He was using 43 Spanish brass expanded out to .446. Got the brass with the gun. Can't...

44-90 Sharps Necked 2 7/16 Cartridge
HELP !!!! Measured the chamber on my new to me Ballard 44-77 Sharps Bottle Neck (SBN) and came up with a case length that was longer than the 44-77 SBN. There are no cartridge stampings on the barrel. I have some cerrosafe on it's way to me and will do a chamber cast as soon as it gets here. My meas...

Re: Ballard receivers with forging flaws
Well, had a metal engineer look at the receiver and he said that it was caused by 'scale' being hammered/folded into the metal during the forging process. He measured the width and depth with some kind of machine that uses optics and laser to measure surface variations/defects. The widest spot he co...

Re: Ballard receivers with forging flaws
This is a J.M. Marlin forged receiver, not cast, in 44-77 SBN. Black powder or BP substitutes are the only powder I would ever think of using in these old guns. Shoot what it was designed to shoot has always been my motto. It is not worth taking a chance on blowing up a great old gun, no matter what...

Ballard receivers with forging flaws
I've seen several Ballards with forging flaws in the steel on different parts of the receiver. All looked like cracks with the metal missing, but closer inspection revealed that it was a forging flaw in the steel. How common is this on the old Ballards and since most of the forging flaws where lengt...
